Johns Hopkins University Research Technologist in Baltimore, Maryland

The Department of Epidemiology is seeking a casual Research Technologist that will assist with the day to operations of the specimen management lab. Work with a repository of frozen specimens for epidemiological studies. Responsible for key aspects of clinical research projects and quality assurance for state and federal regulatory compliance requirements for a certified clinical lab.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Provide support to multi-site biological repository service center and longitudinal, epidemiological studies of HIV infection, hepatitis infection, Autism, Cancer and other chronic disease

  • Duties to include, but not limited to, daily entering of laboratory data into databases using specialized software for biological specimen cataloguing and archiving

  • Separation of blood samples into plasma, serum, and other blood components. Performance of phlebotomy on clinical research participants

  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field.

Preferred qualifications:

Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred. Experience gained through college level classwork in the sciences or summer employment. Biological science coursework, or experience in a biological laboratory is preferred. Previous experience with Phlebotomy or a possession of a phlebotomy certification.

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Complete annual biohazard/safety training. Working knowledge of Excel, data entry skills, organization, team player and attention to detail.

Technical qualifications or specialized certifications:

General working knowledge of computers including Microsoft Excel

Any specific physical requirements for the job:

Work is subject to precise measures of quantity and quality and include extremes of cold .

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
